Italy in October is such a dream. From the lovely weather to the scenic vistas, October is an amazing time to visit Italy. We loved our trip to Italy in October and packing for weather variability and being prepared for long walking days meant it was crucial to pack right. There are a few things that I was VERY glad I packed and others I could have left at home. This guide serves as a practical packing guide to make packing for Italy in October simple.
Quick October Weather Overview in Italy
Weather across Italy during this time is much milder compared to the summer. This makes temperatures comfortable for walking and exploring.
Weather Breakdown by City
Venice
Our experience with the weather in Venice was truly lovely. The entire time we were there the temperatures were cool and comfortable. We did experience a bit of light rain during our stay, but it made the skies overcast and the air a little misty which added to the mystical vibe that Venice embodies.
Weather in Northern Italy averages 65℉ – 70℉ during the day with slightly cooler temperatures after the sun sets. This makes for a very comfortable environment to wander the canals.
Rome
The weather in Rome was perfect the entire time we were there. The sun was shining all three days and was warm enough to walk around without a jacket, but cool enough that we never became overheated.
Weather in Central Italy averages 65℉ – 75℉ during the day with cooler temperatures at night. This makes for fantastic weather to explore and to soak in the sights.
Florence
We experienced the most unpredictable weather during our stay in Florence. The temperatures were similar to that of Rome, but it was fairly rainy during the duration of our stay. We still had a lovely time exploring Florence! I just recommend packing or purchasing a rain jacket and packing a pair of water resistant shoes, just in case you’re caught in the rain. Again, this did not diminish our experience, as the rain added to the fall vibes, it is just something to be prepared for.
Florence also falls into the Central Italy region, same as Rome, so average temperatures are similar at 65℉ – 75℉ average temperatures during the day with cooler temperatures at night.
Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast was absolutely stunning in October. We travelled in mid-October just before major seasonal shut downs began. This meant that the weather was not necessarily beach perfect. However, it was absolutely ideal for experiencing the Amalfi Coast with few crowds, days filled with sunshine, and a slight breeze blowing off the water.
Average temperatures on the Amalfi Coast and Southern Italy during October average between 69℉ – 75℉ during the day with slightly cooler temperatures at night.
We loved our time on the Amalfi Coast in October and I would highly recommend it.
My Biggest Packing Advice for Italy in October
Italy is one of those places where there is so much to see that you will spend every day of your trip on your feet walking everywhere. This means that comfort should be the first thing that you think about when you’re putting together your wardrobe.
I am definitely a person who is inclined to pack that extra outfit or pair of shoes just in case. But here’s the thing – you NEVER need it. Ever. You will never regret packing less but you will always regret packing too much.
This is especially apparent when you have to drag multiple heavy suitcases across the cobblestone streets in the rain (yes, we had to do that) and then lug it up the stairs to the fourth floor (yes, we also did that).
The good news about packing for Italy in October is that the weather is mild making it very easy to pack light, think in layers, and prioritize comfortable shoes.
The Italy Packing List
Clothing Essentials
For our two-week trip to Italy in October, I mostly packed dresses and jumpsuits because they are all-in-one outfits that can be worn twice. This is perfect for saving space and making ensembles easy. I also highly recommend packing a light jacket or shawl because it can get chilly in the evenings.
Comfortable Shoes for Italy
Everyone says to pack comfortable shoes and after a while it can sound like white noise. However, I promise you – this is truly the most important thing you can pack.
Walking 15,000 – 25,000 steps daily is no joke and making sure you have shoes up to the task is of vital importance. Not only this, you’ll be navigating a multitude of terrains, such as cobblestone streets and numerous stairs. Therefore, it is crucial to thoughtfully choose shoes that provide support and comfort. That being said, it is still possible to have shoes that are both comfortable and stylish.

What I Wish I Had Left at Home
I packed WAY too many outfits. I essentially packed two outfits for every single day. One for the day and one for the evening. I literally wore half the outfits I packed, which meant there was so much wasted space. It is better to leave room for souvenirs than to pack too much clothing for your trip. Packing for Italy in October is best when kept simple and comfortable without sacrificing style.
Packing Tips for First-Time Italy Visitors
The main takeaway from this article for packing for Italy in October is packing versatile clothing items and to be very thoughtful about which items you pack. A great rule of thumb I like to follow is keeping my clothing and shoes just to a carry-on, place toiletries, jewelry, etc in my personal item then reserve a checked bag for a couple extraneous items and plenty of space for souvenirs.
While we effectively traveled by train all over Italy with a carry-on each and two larger checked luggage pieces, I can attest to the fact that bringing less is absolutely more. It is very often that you will have to carry your luggage up multiple flights of stairs and drag baggage across cobblestone streets. The less you bring, the easier it is to get around.
We also stayed in Airbnbs throughout our trip and a couple of them had washers. This makes it even easier to pack a little lighter and do laundry halfway through your trip. This is a lesson I learned for future trips from my trip to Italy is to rely more heavily on doing laundry and rewearing outfits rather than packing a fresh outfit for every single day.
Final Thoughts
Packing for Italy in October is relatively simple with a few tips and tricks. Comfort, especially when it comes to shoes, should be the headline for every item packed. I also recommend not overcomplicating what you pack for Italy in October. Select items that you feel good in and will be relevant in several settings. For example, I opted for more modest dresses and jumpsuits because they are stylish and work well for going into churches and religious spaces. Keep your wardrobe simple and comfortable to keep your packing light and outfits well assembled.
