Best Time to Visit Italy: Why October is Perfect

Is October the Best Time to Visit Italy?

Italy is a magical destination at any time of year. However, October offers a special balance of cooler weather, beautiful landscapes, and lower costs. “When is the best time to visit Italy?” is a tough question because each season offers its own pros and cons. However, after doing extensive research and then embarking on the trip myself, October was the best time of year to travel to Italy.

The weather was very pleasant throughout our entire trip. We only had a few days of rainfall, but that really added to the ambiance of the season. Shoulder-season pricing is a big perk, especially on the Amalfi Coast and Venice, where tourism is especially low this time of year. Fewer tourists is another major reason to travel to Italy in October. It is impossible to completely avoid tourists, after all we are tourists too, right? But it makes the experience much more relaxing when you don’t have to battle large crowds.

Italy in October at a Glance

Average Weather Across Italy

Weather across Italy during this time is much milder compared to the summer. This makes temperatures comfortable for walking and exploring.

Venice

Our experience with the weather in Venice was truly lovely. The entire time we were there the temperatures were cool and comfortable. We did experience a bit of light rain during our stay, but it made the skies overcast and the air a little misty which added to the mystical vibe that Venice embodies.

Weather in Northern Italy averages 65℉ – 70℉ during the day with slightly cooler temperatures after the sun sets. This makes for a very comfortable environment to wander the canals.

Rome

The weather in Rome was perfect the entire time we were there. The sun was shining all three days and was warm enough to walk around without a jacket, but cool enough that we never became overheated.

Weather in Central Italy averages 65℉ – 75℉ during the day with cooler temperatures at night. This makes for fantastic weather to explore and to soak in the sights.

Florence

We experienced the most unpredictable weather during our stay in Florence. The temperatures were similar to that of Rome, but it was fairly rainy during the duration of our stay. We still had a lovely time exploring Florence! I recommend packing or purchasing a rain jacket and packing a pair of water resistant shoes, just in case you’re caught in the rain. Again, this did not diminish our experience, as the rain added to the fall vibes, it is just something to be prepared for.

Florence also falls into the Central Italy region, same as Rome, so average temperatures are similar at 65℉ – 75℉ average temperatures during the day with cooler temperatures at night.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast was absolutely stunning in October. We travelled in mid-October just before major seasonal shut downs began. This meant that the weather was not necessarily beach perfect. However, it was absolutely ideal for experiencing the Amalfi Coast with few crowds, days filled with sunshine, and a slight breeze blowing off the water.

Average temperatures on the Amalfi Coast and Southern Italy during October average between 69℉ – 75℉ during the day with slightly cooler temperatures at night.

We loved our time on the Amalfi Coast in October and I would highly recommend it.

Crowds and Tourist Volume

A huge opportunity for travelling to Italy in October are fewer crowds. The summer in Italy is beautiful but very crowded which can make it difficult to really explore. Reduced crowds are a huge advantage, especially for the Amalfi Coast, Rome, and Venice. The only location that we still experienced fairly heavy tourism was Florence. It did not inhibit our ability to explore, rather it just surprised us a bit. However, for the other three locations we visited we found that this timeframe was perfect for exploration. This was especially true for access to museums and key sites, as well as generally wandering the streets and canals.

Additionally, due to reduced crowds, it opens up unique opportunities for photography. I absolutely took advantage of this when we were able to wander side streets that had no one other than my husband and I. Through these relaxed moments I was able to capture special images that I would have been challenged to do if there was heavy tourism.

Lastly, fewer crowds means train stations are less hectic and the ability to wander unencumbered makes traveling through Italy far less stressful.

Travel Costs in October

Our trip to Italy in October was not cheap by any means. However, overall prices for major ticket items like flights and accommodations were much lower than during the summer, which opened up our budget to spend on other things like tours and as much food and wine as we wanted.

We travelled to Italy for two weeks, so I will break down the total approximate prices below for key items. Reminder the prices for items such as flights, activities, and transportation reflect total costs for two people.

Flights (Round-Trip San Antonio to Rome) $2,770
Accommodations (Airbnbs) $1500
Get Your Guide (Activities) $1,800
Trains  $380
Total for Two People for Two Weeks $6,450

These core items for two people were relatively reasonable for a two week trip to Italy in October, which left us plenty of room to spend on food, wine, splurges, and conveniences.

We also found that there was wider availability, particularly on the Amalfi Coast and in Venice. It is important to note that there are festivals that take place later in October, which may cause a few price hikes around those times. However, as I mentioned, in our experience we had great luck with this being a budget-friendly time of year to visit Italy.

Why October Is One of the Best Months to Visit Italy

Perfect Sightseeing Weather

During the summer of 2019 I traveled to Rome. While I did fall in love with the city, there is no doubt that it was HOT. I love the sunshine and heat – I moved from Indiana to Texas after all – but when you are walking 15,000 steps a day and trying to explore as many sites as possible, the heat can make it a challenge. I have traveled to several locations at all times of year and I have discovered is there is a real advantage to traveling during cooler weather. Yes, there are some risks of rain or unpredictable weather, but overall the ability to walk all day without feeling exhausted from the heat can be a real advantage.

We found this to be particularly true in Rome when there is history on literally every corner and walking everywhere is more than possible. The mild temperatures combined with the sunshine made it very pleasant to explore. A great example here was a tour we had at the colosseum and roman forum. The tour is entirely outside and when I had previously gone in the summer toward the end I was sweating and felt tired from being in the summer sun. However, during our trip in October, the weather was perfect and we were ready to keep moving on to the other places we planned to sightsee that day.

Fall Harvest Season in Italy

We did not observe or participate in any harvests during our trip, but there are some really interesting cultural opportunities to engage in various festivals associated with a few of the main harvests that occur in October.

While harvest seasons have broad timelines and vary by regions, here are a few harvests that take place during October in Italy:

  • Wine Harvest (vendemmia)
  • Olive Harvest

Not only this, but October marks the start of Truffle Season, making it a great time to try this delicacy.

Stunning Autumn Landscapes

Tuscany was absolutely gorgeous in October. Everything from the lighting to the rolling hills was beautiful. Many of the vineyards we visited had a mix of green lushness and autumn color changes. This made the vistas of the Tuscan countryside particularly beautiful.

Best Places to Visit in Italy in October

For our two week trip to Italy, we opted to visit four locations. These included Rome, Florence & Tuscany, Venice, and Rome.

I recommend you check out my article How to Plan a Trip to Italy: A Step-by-Step Guide for First Time Visitors for the full guide on how to craft your perfect trip to Italy. This guide will help you decide how long you should travel for and which cities you should go to. That being said, October is a great time to visit these cities.

Rome

October in Rome was honestly perfect. The weather was fantastic, which made it perfect for exploration. Lines to get into the colosseum and the Vatican were much shorter.

Florence & Tuscany

Florence and Tuscany were also lovely during October. We loved the fall vibe of Florence and enjoyed the mild temperatures when visiting wineries.

Venice

I felt like Venice in October was one of the best choices we could have made. During the summer, there is a heavy influx of day-trip tourism, as well as cruise ship crowds infiltrating the city. However, during our stay in Venice we experienced very few crowds and misty, mystical vibes of the canals.

I wrote a full article about how beautiful and underrated Venice is as a destination in my article Venice is the Perfect Couples’ Destination: Here’s Why.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast was another location that we had not expected to be as superb as it was during October. The weather was cool enough for exploration, yet still warm and sunny that we still were able to get the full experience of Amalfi Coast.

While going swimming is probably not an activity I’d add to my list while traveling to the Amalfi Coast in October, it is still perfect for boat rides and sightseeing.

The only thing to watch for in the Amalfi Coast during October is about mid to late October seasonal closures occur, including the ferries. This is why we planned our trip with us starting our journey on the Amalfi Coast and then going to our other locations.

Potential Downsides of Visiting Italy in October

Rainfall in Florence and Venice

As I mentioned earlier, it rained extensively in Florence and a bit in Venice, as well. This is not a huge inhibitor but it is something you should plan for, just in case. I highly recommend packing a light rain jacket or preparing to look like a bit of a tourist by purchasing a plastic rain poncho (yes, we had to do that). I would also plan to bring water resistant shoes.

Something we did that was extremely helpful was we sprayed our shoes with water repellant spray which protected our shoes from water. More importantly, it kept our feet dry.

A key thing to remember for Venice is that a phenomenon called the acqua alta is possible during this time. Essentially, it means extreme flooding where the city gets creative with elevated platforms to get around but also means that high waterproof boots are necessary. We did not run into any issues with this, but it is something to be aware of as you plan your trip.

Shorter Daylight Hours

The one drawback of this time of year is the days are VERY short. Some days the sun would start to go down at 4 or 5 in the evening. This meant we had to start our days as early as we could to make sure we could maximize daylight hours.

Seasonal Closures in Coastal Areas

Places like the Amalfi Coast, and other coastal locations, experience seasonal closures. This can include reduced or no operations of ferries or transportation, as well as the potential of minimal options for hotels or restaurants. For these locations, going earlier in October is better so that you can still experience most of what these places have to offer before they mostly close for the season.

What to Pack for Italy in October

Packing for a full two week trip through Italy can be a challenge, especially if you are traveling to different parts of the country that may have slightly different weather. The good news about Italy in October lends itself to layers which makes mixing and matching easy.

Below are a few of the essentials I found very helpful on my trip.

Essentials

  • Layered clothing or dresses
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light jacket
  • Compact umbrella
  • Crossbody bag

October vs Other Months in Italy

October vs September

September still has some of the residual of summer crowds making it not as ideal as October if you are seeking shoulder season crowds and pricing.

October vs Summer

The summer is hot and crowded in Italy. Don’t get me wrong, if the only time you have available to travel to Italy is the summer – GO! Italy is an amazing destination for so many reasons so don’t let the stigma of summer heat and crowds hold you back. That being said, if you have flexibility and are looking to experience Italy outside of peak season, October offers lower prices, fewer crowds, and cooler weather.

October vs November

November falls more in the winter category for traveling to Italy, which may offer additional advantages similar to October in terms of crowds, pricing, and weather. Coastal areas experience closures at this time, so if that is a must for your trip to Italy then November is not recommended. November also tends to be colder and rainier.
