My First Impressions of Coffee Culture in Italy

My husband and I strolled along the winding canals of Venice in the early morning looking for a cup of coffee and a pastry to start our day. We stumbled upon a local coffee shop and decided to go in. When we opened the door, the smell of espresso filled the air and the delicious pastries dazzled us.

We approached the counter and ordered a cappuccino (only appropriate before 11 a.m.) and a cornetto. The barista asked if we planned to sit, to which we replied, “yes.” We situated ourselves at a small table where our coffees and pastries were delivered to us. 

During our time sitting in the coffee shop, we learned that locals tend to stop in for a quick espresso standing at the counter rather than sit and stay. This is an important distinction for understanding how coffee culture in Italy works. From this experience, we learned how locals engage with coffee in Italy and incorporated our observations into our daily experiences.

Coffee in Italy Is a Ritual, Not a Beverage

Coffee culture in Italy is centered on having a quick shot of espresso standing at the bar then moving on with your day. Interactions with baristas are brief and to the point. While sitting at the local coffee shop, we observed that several locals seemed to know the barista and were regulars. However, the interactions were short and taking an espresso shot at the counter then leaving was a common occurrence. 

Coffee culture in Italy is focused on a small, strong, delicious shot of espresso. It is a fairly quick process, so don’t expect a large cup of coffee or the ability to take it to-go. Coffee is meant for a pick-me-up, not something to be consumed all day.

In this way, the ritual of ordering a coffee feels very intentional. It is not something that you have sitting on your desk drinking throughout the day. Italian coffee culture is about purpose and focusing on the coffee itself while you are drinking it. 

Why Italian Coffee Culture Feels Different

Coffee culture in Italy feels very intentional. An interesting observations is that coffee is not ever-present or in large portions. Coffee culture in Italy is focused on being in the moment and consuming coffee intentionally. This can be seen through the small shots of quality espresso that are served. While the experience is fairly brief since the regular practice is to stand at the bar and quickly enjoy an espresso, it is also very purposeful.

Italian coffee culture is not about consuming as much as you can. Rather, it is more important to consume with purpose and intentionality.

What Travelers Can Learn from Coffee Culture in Italy

When going to a coffee shop in Italy, I highly recommend slowing down and opening your eyes to the interactions happening around you. Embrace the standing at the bar culture and enjoy an espresso the way it is intended to be enjoyed. 

Drinking coffee intentionally is something that I believe is the most important lesson to take away.

Conclusion

I will never forget the feeling of seeing the Colosseum for the first time or gazing at the rolling hills of Tuscany. While these prominent experiences will always hold a special spot in my heart, there is something equally impactful about reflecting upon the small moments that surfaced in local coffee shops. Coffee culture in Italy is a lovely reflection of Italy itself. Italy is a lovely place to remind yourself of how special little moments are and how important it is to be intentional day-to-day.
